Teton Valley Health Care is an organization with a small award winning Critical Access Hospital in Eastern Idaho near the Grand Teton Mountains.  Our facility is private not for profit and independently run by our board of volunteer community members. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Nursing position conducts supervisory and management practices in the care of the physically and mentally ill. Work in this role involves responsibility for directing the provision of quality nursing care given at TVHC. This position is responsible for maintaining the quality and adequacy of nursing practice; for coordinating nursing and training programs; for recognizing and assisting in solving professional, administrative and supervisory problems in an assigned area. Position exercises considerable judgment in applying professional knowledge in solving nursing problems within established policies and practices and is reviewed by the supervisor through conferences, reports and observation of results obtained. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Works with CNO to develop and maintain optimal staffing levels for acute care and emergency department
  • Communicates concerns by unit to appropriate staff (via e-mails, voice mail, etc.).
  • Serves as administrative authority for the smooth function of all nursing and emergency department units. Notifies Chief Nursing Officer of urgent concern. When the concern is non-urgent, notifies chief nursing officer by phone message or e-mail. Keeps Chief Nursing Officer informed of any needs and problems Receives employee, patient and family grievances. Refers information to appropriate supervisor.
  • Assures survey compliance, quality assurance and staff development duties. Notifies Chief Nursing Officer of identified learning needs.
  • Completes evaluations for employees. Presents evaluations.
  • Assists with annual budget preparation for IV therapy, emergency department, acute care, respiratory care and other departments as assigned.
  • Counsels personnel. Completes appropriate documentation and communicates with Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Assures that staffing is in place. Assigns and directs units and pool staff.
  • Receives employee time off requests. Records time offs and updates schedule.
  • Replaces for absences and vacancies for upcoming shift(s). Assists staff to pick up hours (call-in phone, e-mail, vacancy lists,).
  • Maintains proficiency with electronic medical record, including developing training for staff and building forms, procedures, templates, macros and order sets.
  • Works with the staffing schedule to assure that vacancies are filled in advance.
  • Directs staff and assures survey compliance on a daily basis. Provides guidance and support to staff to better plan work flow.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of TVHC strategic objectives and assists in coordination of operational planning and related quality improvement tools. Maintains skills for effectively deploying these tools to the organization.
  • Creates and communicates new ideas, messages, processes, policies, and delegation of responsibilities in a clear, precise, unbiased, and professional manner.
  • Receives reports throughout the shift.
  • Responsible for case management, which includes utilization review and discharge planning
  • Assists RNs in assessing patients who are experiencing acute changes.
  • Provides clinical expertise in the management of patients.
  • Manage Time Sensitive Emergency certifications:       stroke, trauma and STEMI.
  • Responds to code blue, trauma activations. Assists staff, as needed.
  • Audits charts routinely. Provides clinical expertise in documentation.
  • Directs staff response to emergencies, such severe weather, fire or bomb scare. Participates in fire drills. Directs disaster evacuation plan, as needed.
  • Meets regularly with the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.
  • Serves and/or leads committees, as assigned, including, but not limited to, pharmacy and therapeutics, multi-disciplinary review, preauthorization and utilization review committee, quality assurance, , safety, etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has overall supervisory responsibility for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants,  paramedics, medication assistants and related personnel as directed by the Chief Nursing Officer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in professional patient care environments located within a Critical Access Hospital. This role routinely uses computers, photo copiers, land line phones, and extensive medical equipment. Patient monitoring and frequent contact with staff, patients, and community members is to be expected. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality and HIPAA compliance. This role may encounter Hazards from needles, moving parts on beds, wheelchairs and other equipment. Explosive Hazards are present from oxygen canisters that can explode if an oxygen leak comes into contact with flames or sparks. Electrical Hazards are present from equipment including beds, IV pumps and other patient care durable medical equipment. Additional hazards may include but are not limited to exposure to contagious diseases and combative patients. Some atmospheric conditions include occasional exposure to fumes and mists from mixing drugs, frequent exposure to gases from oxygen treatments and patient odors. To maintain Universal Body Substance Isolation precautions all TVHC employees are required to wear applicable Protective Clothing and Devices which include but are not limited to gloves, masks, gowns, aprons, and protective glasses.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current State of Idaho Registered Nurse License, or Compact state with ability to transfer to Idaho
  • Current BLS certification
  • Supervisory experience in a team leader role.
  • Work experience as a professional nurse.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Basic knowledge in computer use; including email and electronic documentation
  • Ability to use standard patient care equipment including handling flammable gases
  • Ability to maintain and follow guidelines, set standards of practice in quality patient care, and state, federal, and facility required infection control practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills matching our patients needs and TVHC's mission and values

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years or more of Hospital Nursing Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or greater
  • PALS certification
  • ACLS certification
  • Additional languages Spanish Preferred

 

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand and/or walk 60% of the time
  • Ability to assist in lifting patients over 100lbs occasionally and frequently
  • Lifting equipment and other items up to 25lbs
  • Ability to frequently stoop, crouch and/or reach below, at, or above shoulder level for short periods of time
  • Manual dexterity, ability to concentrate, and good eye-hand coordination required
  • Vision requiring near and far acuity, depth perception, and an ability to adjust focus and maintain a good field of vision is required for patient assessment, observation, treatment and documentation
  • Mental, Physical, and emotional abilities to respond to emergency situations
  • Written and spoken communication skills require the ability to speak, hear and see
  • Critical thinking and good judgment needed to be able to follow Federal, State and hospital policies and procedures
